MOBILE, Ala. — A 24-year-old man was killed and nine other people were injured in a shooting just blocks from where thousands of people were on the streets for a New Year’s Eve party in downtown Mobile, Alabama. said the police in a sentence.
Television news video showed troopers running and on horseback rushing into the area in the 200 block of Dauphin Street about 45 minutes before midnight Saturday.
The man who died was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. His identity has not been revealed.
The other victims, ranging in age from 17 to 57, were taken to the hospital with serious or non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
Mobile police could not immediately be reached for comment.
The shooting occurred a few blocks from the main stage of the Moon Pie Over Mobile festival. The event continued with fireworks and a mooncake falling from a downtown building at midnight to mark the beginning of 2023.
The shooter and the person who died appeared to know each other, Police Chief Paul Prine told reporters near the scene.
“It would give some comfort to all of us downtown that this was not just a random shooting,” Prine said.
