A 12-year-old girl was being held at a juvenile facility after fatally stabbing her 9-year-old brother, police said.
The stabbing was reported just before midnight Thursday at a residence in the St. Thomas Square community south of downtown Tulsa, Oklahoma, Tulsa police said in a statement released Friday.
“Officers learned that the boys’ parents were sleeping upstairs when the 12-year-old daughter woke them up and told them that she had stabbed her 9-year-old brother,” the Tulsa Police Department said.
City firefighters and emergency medical technicians from a contracted ambulance service administered CPR before the boy was rushed to a hospital, the department said.
He underwent surgery before succumbing to his injuries around 2:30 a.m. Saturday, police said.
The girl was detained at the Tulsa Juvenile Justice Family Center and was held there until at least Friday, according to police statements. The charges underlying her arrest were not available and the motive for the alleged attack has not been disclosed.
It was not clear if the girl, whose name was withheld because of her age, obtained a lawyer for the case. The Tulsa County Juvenile Division of Public Defenders did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Under Oklahoma law, she can be detained for five business days until a petition is filed outlining possible charges.
Children 12 years and under are forbidden to be retainedbut state law makes exceptions for felony-equivalent reporting cases where the child may be a risk to himself or the community.
oklahoma law draws the line at age 13 by allowing a child of that age or older to be prosecuted as an adult on felony murder charges.
The Tulsa Police Department’s Children’s Crisis Unit was in charge of investigating the case.
