The violence broke out minutes after a California Highway Patrol officer reported on a police radio that they had been shot at around 12:30 p.m., Roseville Police Capt. Kelby Newton told reporters. .

Officers arrived in the Mahany Park area and found a man running from them and shooting at them, Newton said.

He then took two hostages, both adults, according to Newton.

Those people «were hit by gunfire from the suspect during the incident,» and one of them was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.

The man surrendered and he and the wounded hostage were taken to a hospital for treatment, Newton said.

At a news conference Thursday, his condition was said to be unknown, though Newton said the suspect was not believed to have been shot. He did not elaborate on why the suspect was brought in for treatment.

The California Highway Patrol officer who was shot was in stable condition, CHP Officer Ricardo Ortiz said.

It was not immediately clear how they ended up shooting the hostages. Their identities and the identity of the suspect have not been released publicly.

The shooting occurred near some Little League fields, police said. There were no official events there at the time, but there were people in the area.

A man out in the fields with his 12-year-old grandson and his friend for batting practice. told Sacramento’s NBC affiliate KCRA that the officers ran up and told them to get down.

“We ran to the bench. I think the cops were shooting like this, and this guy was shooting at the cops,» the man said. “The bullets were passing us, so we ducked. Very scary.»

Newton said CHP was serving an arrest warrant at the time of the incident, but referred to that agency for more details.

CHP did not immediately respond to a request for additional details Thursday night.

Also near the scene of the shooting was a library where campouts were taking place, and some people were at a high school near the scene, though school was not in session this week, Newton said.

Those facilities remained in place until the incident ended, he said. There were also people using trails in the park at the time.
